Observation of a mysterious tsunami in Japan

A tsunami occurred near Torishima in the Ogasawara Islands at around 5:25 on October 9, 2023. The Japan Meteorological Agency has announced that this tsunami was triggered by a very shallow earthquake of unknown magnitude. The existence of this tsunami was confirmed through real-time observation at tide gauge stations along the coast of Japan. At 7:11 and 7:17, it reached a maximum of 60 cm on Hachijojima Island, between 7:20 and 7:30 it reached a maximum of 50 cm on the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands, and after 7:30 it reached the Kochi and Chiba coasts. Based on the observed facts, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami report at 7:51 am. Later, around 8:30 it was announced that three fishing boats had been washed away and capsized on Hachijojima Island. Earthquakes of around magnitude 6 have occured frequently in this area, and volcanic activity was suspected. It is speculated that the current tsunami was caused by seabed movements related to volcanic activity. However, the Japan Meteorological Agency does not deny that submarine landslides may be the trigger of the tsunami.

日本における奇妙な津波の観測

2023年10月9日5時25分頃に小笠原諸島の鳥島近海で津波が発生しました。この津波はマグニチュードが不明でごく浅い地震がトリガーであると気象庁は発表しています。この津波は、日本沿岸での検潮所でのリアルタイム観測によって、その存在が確認されました。7時11分と17分に八丈島で最大60㎝、7時20分から30分には伊豆諸島や小笠原諸島で最大50㎝、7時30分以降には、高知や千葉沿岸に到達し、これらの観測事実に基づいて、7時51分に気象庁から津波注意報が発表されました。その後、八丈島において、漁船3隻が流され、転覆していることが8時30分頃に発表されました。この海域では、マグニチュード６前後の地震が頻発しており、火山活動が疑わされている。今回の津波も火山活動に関連した海底変動が推測されている。ただし、海底地すべりによる誘因も気象庁は否定していない。
